چکیده
ABSTRACT We present the results from an analysis of deep Herschel far-infrared (far-IR) observations edge-on disc galaxy NGC 3079. The point spread function-cleaned Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) images at 100 160 µm display a 25 × kpc2 X-shape structure centred on nucleus that is similar in extent orientation to seen H ?, X-rays, far-ultraviolet. One dusty filaments making up this detected Spectral Photometric Imaging Receiver 250 map out ?25 kpc nucleus. match between far-IR those other wavelengths suggests material has been lifted by same large-scale galactic wind produced structures object. A closer look central 10 region provides additional support for scenario. dust temperatures traced 100–160 flux ratios are enhanced within biconical active nucleus, aligned along minor axis galaxy, coincident with well-known double-lobed cm-wave radio ?–X-ray nuclear superbubbles. PACS imaging spectroscopy inner 6 reveals broad [C ii] 158 emission line profiles OH 79 absorption features widths well excess expected beam smearing rotational motion. GMRT Observations of NGC 3079
We present new observations at three frequencies (326 MHz, 615 MHz, and 1281 MHz) of the radio lobe spiral galaxy, NGC 3079, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. These observations are consistent with previous data obtained at other telescopes and reveal the structure of the nuclear radio lobes in exquisite detail. In addition, new features are observed, some with HI counterparts, showing...
متن کاملThe obscured circumnuclear region of the outflow galaxy NGC 3079
Images of the central region of the almost edge-on Sc galaxy NGC 3079 in the J , H and K-bands and in the v = 1→0 S(1) line of molecular hydrogen are presented. The inner few kiloparsecs of NGC 3079 exhibit a large range of nearinfrared colours caused by varying contributions from direct and scattered stellar light, emission from hot dust and extinction gradients. Our results show that interpre...
متن کاملVirial shocks in galactic haloes?
We investigate the conditions for the existence of an expanding virial shock in the gas falling within a spherical dark-matter halo. The shock relies on pressure support by the shock-heated gas behind it. When the radiative cooling is efficient compared to the infall rate the post-shock gas becomes unstable; it collapses inwards and cannot support the shock. We find for a monoatomic gas that th...
متن کاملMagnetic fields in galactic haloes
Magnetic fields on a range of scales play a large role in the ecosystems of galaxies, both in the galactic disk and in the extended layers of gas away from the plane. Observing magnetic field strength, structure and orientation is complex, and necessarily indirect. Observational data of magnetic fields in the halo of the Milky Way are scarce, and non-conclusive about the large-scale structure o...
متن کاملGalactic stellar haloes in the CDM model
We present six simulations of galactic stellar haloes formed by the tidal disruption of accreted dwarf galaxies in a fully cosmological setting. Our model is based on the Aquarius project, a suite of high-resolution N-body simulations of individual dark matter haloes. We tag subsets of particles in these simulations with stellar populations predicted by the GALFORM semianalytic model. Our metho...
